Tips for Growing Outstanding Tomatoes in Your Backyard

There’s nothing quite like a sun-ripened tomato straight from your own garden. Whether you're a seasoned grower or trying your hand at backyard gardening for the first time, growing tomatoes in Sonoma County can be incredibly rewarding—if you plant with intention.

At LandZen, we believe that good landscape design isn't just about aesthetics—it's also about creating spaces that work for your lifestyle. And for many of our clients, that includes garden beds full of homegrown produce. If you're in USDA Zones 9a, 9b or 10a (which covers most of Sonoma County), you're in luck: this is one of the best regions in California for growing tomatoes.

Here are our top tips for growing outstanding tomatoes in your backyard landscape:

1. Pick the Right Varieties for Your Zone

In our warm Mediterranean climate, tomatoes thrive—but not all varieties are created equal. Look for heat-tolerant and disease-resistant types like:

  • Early Girl (great for slicing)

  • San Marzano (a favorite for sauces)

  • Sun Gold (a sweet cherry tomato that rarely disappoints)

Heirloom varieties like Brandywine also do well but can be a little more finicky. Choose a mix for the best results and stagger your planting for a longer harvest season.

2. Choose a Sunny Spot in Your Landscape

Tomatoes need a minimum of 6–8 hours of full sun daily. In Sonoma County, this usually isn’t a problem, but placement matters. If you’re incorporating raised beds or edible garden space into your overall landscape design, consider proximity to water, wind exposure, and afternoon sun patterns.

3. Prep Your Soil Like a Pro

Healthy soil equals healthy plants. In our region, soils can be clay-heavy, so amend generously with compost, worm castings, and organic matter. We recommend working in some slow-release organic tomato fertilizer when planting.

4. Water Deeply (But Not Too Often)

Consistent watering is key. Deep, infrequent watering encourages strong root systems. In Sonoma County’s dry summers, we typically recommend watering 2–3 times a week depending on your soil type, weather, and mulch coverage. Drip irrigation systems are great for tomatoes and can be built right into your landscape irrigation design for low-maintenance care.

5. Mulch to Keep Moisture In and Weeds Out

Tomatoes appreciate a layer of mulch. Straw, compost, or even landscape fabric can help retain moisture and regulate soil temperatures, especially in the heat of summer.

6. Support Your Plants Early

Install cages or trellises when planting to avoid disturbing roots later. Whether you prefer a rustic wood frame or something more modern, the right structure can integrate seamlessly into your landscape design.

7. Watch for Pests and Diseases

Common Sonoma County tomato pests include aphids, hornworms, and spider mites. Encourage beneficial insects, rotate crops, and inspect plants often. Neem oil or insecticidal soap can be used sparingly if needed.

8. Harvest Tomatoes Often and Enjoy

Ripe tomatoes left too long on the vine can split or invite critters. Pick regularly for continuous production, and don’t forget to share with the neighbors!
